Radiography Testing (RT) Services
Radiography Testing (RT) is a powerful non-destructive testing (NDT) technique that utilizes X-rays or gamma rays to penetrate materials and reveal internal flaws without damaging the component. This method ensures structural integrity, safety compliance, and extended equipment life across various industries.
How It Works
Radiographic testing involves directing a controlled beam of ionizing radiation (X-ray or gamma ray) through the component onto a radiographic film or digital detector on the opposite side. Variations in material density or internal discontinuities such as cracks, porosity, lack of fusion, or inclusions are revealed as differences in image contrast, allowing for accurate flaw identification.
Applications of Radiography Testing
Welds and Joints
Radiography is widely used to inspect butt welds, fillet welds, and other structural welds for:
Incomplete penetration or fusion
Internal cracks or slag inclusion
Porosity and blow holes
Misalignments
Pipelines and Piping Systems
Used extensively in oil & gas, chemical, and water distribution industries, RT ensures:
Weld integrity in pipeline joints
Detection of internal corrosion or erosion
Identification of stress-induced defects
Pressure Vessels, Heat Exchangers, and Critical Equipment
For high-pressure environments, RT verifies structural soundness by checking:
Weld seams in pressure boundaries
Tube-to-tube sheet joints
Critical zones susceptible to fatigue or creep
Storage Tanks and Spheres
Essential in tank fabrication and maintenance:
Spot checks on shell welds and nozzle joints
Evaluation of internal defects in load-bearing areas
Periodic inspection during shutdowns or regulatory audits
Standards & Compliance
All radiographic inspections are carried out by certified personnel as per ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ISO 9712, or equivalent certification schemes.
Radiography Testing is performed in accordance with national and international codes and standards, including but not limited to:
- ASME Section V & VIII
- ASTM E94 / E1030 / E1742
- ISO 17636
- API 650 / 653
- EN ISO 5579
Key Advantages
- High accuracy in internal flaw detection
- Permanent inspection records (film or digital)
- Applicable to a wide range of materials and thicknesses
- Minimal surface preparation required
Deliverables
Clients receive a detailed inspection report, including:
- Radiographic images (film or digital)
- Indication and evaluation of flaws
- Interpretation based on applicable codes
- Acceptance/rejection criteria summary
Safety Measures
Due to the use of ionizing radiation, strict adherence to radiation safety protocols is maintained, including:
- Controlled access zones
- Trained and licensed radiographers
- Regulatory compliance with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) / AERB guidelines (India-specific, modify based on location)
